Teeth whitening in Sedgley & Dudley

Teeth Whitening For a Brighter Smile

Tea, coffee, red wine, smoking and simply getting older can all leave teeth looking dull or stained. At Highview Dental Practice in Sedgley, Dudley, our professional whitening uses custom-made trays and dentist-prescribed gel to lift the colour of your natural teeth safely and gently, giving you a brighter, more confident smile.

Why choose professional teeth whitening?

Over-the-counter and online kits aren’t made to fit your mouth, and bleaching isn’t suitable for everyone - for example if you have gum disease or crowns. With professional whitening, your dentist checks your teeth are healthy first, prescribes the right gel and makes trays that fit you exactly, for even, natural-looking results.

  • Dentist-checked and supervised
  • Custom-made whitening trays
  • Natural, even results

How does teeth whitening work?

  1. 01

    Consultation

We start by checking that your teeth and gums are healthy and that whitening is suitable for you. Any decay or gum problems are treated first.

  2. 02

    Choosing your shade

Your dentist records the current colour of your teeth and talks with you about the shade you’d like to achieve and what is realistic for your teeth.

  3. 03

    Impressions or scans

We take impressions or digital scans of your upper and lower teeth, which are used to make custom whitening trays that fit you precisely.

  4. 04

    Whitening at home

At your next visit we fit your trays and show you exactly how to apply the gel at home. You then wear them as directed for the course your dentist recommends.

Which whitening system is right for me?

We offer two professional whitening systems, both using custom-made trays, aiming for a bright B1 shade where your teeth allow:

Your dentist will recommend the most suitable option based on your teeth, your goals and how quickly you’d like to see results. Our associate dentist, Dr Edmund Acheampong, has a particular interest in cosmetic dentistry and is a member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

  • Boutique whitening - an effective home whitening system for both upper and lower teeth.
  • Enlighten whitening - a more intensive system offered as a 2-week or 4-week case, for patients wanting a brighter result.
  • Single tooth bleaching - if one tooth has darkened, for example after root canal treatment, it can sometimes be lightened from the inside (internal bleaching), on its own or alongside full whitening.

Is teeth whitening painful?

Is it safe?

Professional whitening shouldn’t be painful, although some people notice temporary tooth sensitivity or mild gum irritation during treatment. This usually settles once whitening stops, and your dentist can suggest ways to manage it, such as a desensitising toothpaste or whitening less often.

In the UK, teeth whitening should only be carried out by a dentist or a registered dental professional working under their prescription, and it isn’t offered to under-18s other than to treat disease. Having your dentist check your teeth first helps make sure whitening is safe and suitable for you.

How long does whitening last?

Results vary from person to person, but with good care many people enjoy a brighter smile for a long time. Tea, coffee, red wine and smoking will gradually re-stain teeth, so cutting back helps your results last.

Keep your trays safe, as top-up gel can be used from time to time to refresh your shade. Regular hygiene appointments, including Airflow stain removal, can also help keep your teeth looking their best. Whitening only works on natural teeth, so existing crowns, veneers and fillings won’t change colour - your dentist will discuss this with you before you start.

FAQs

Teeth Whitening FAQs

Is teeth whitening available on the NHS?

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic treatment, so it is generally not available on the NHS. It is available privately at Highview, and our current fees are shown on this page.

Will whitening work on my crowns or fillings?

Whitening gel only lightens natural teeth, so crowns, veneers, bonding and fillings will stay the same colour. If you have these at the front of your mouth, your dentist may suggest whitening first and then matching any replacements to your new shade.

How many visits will I need?

Usually two short visits - one for a consultation, shade check and impressions or scans, and one to fit your trays and show you how to use them. Your dentist may also arrange a review to check your progress.

Why not just use a shop-bought kit?

Over-the-counter kits aren’t made to fit your mouth and may not be suitable if you have gum disease, decay or crowns. Professional whitening is prescribed and monitored by your dentist, with custom trays that keep the gel where it should be.

Can I whiten just one dark tooth?

Often, yes. A single darkened tooth, for example after root canal treatment, can sometimes be lightened with internal or external bleaching. Your dentist will assess the tooth and explain your options.
