Dental Bridges To Complete Your Smile

A missing tooth can affect how you eat, how you speak and how you feel about your smile. At Highview Dental Practice in Sedgley, Dudley, we offer natural-looking dental bridges that fill the gap using your neighbouring teeth for support. Your dentist will talk you through the options, including bonded and Maryland bridges, so you can choose what suits you best.

Why choose a dental bridge?

Gaps left by missing teeth can make chewing harder, change the way you speak and allow neighbouring teeth to drift or tilt over time. A bridge is fixed in place, so there is nothing to take out at night, and it is made to match the colour and shape of your own teeth for a natural-looking finish.

  • Natural-looking fixed replacement
  • Helps restore your bite
  • Stops neighbouring teeth drifting

What happens when you have a bridge fitted?

  1. 01

    Consultation & assessment

Your dentist will examine the gap and the teeth either side, take X-rays if needed and explain which type of bridge would suit you best.

  2. 02

    Preparing the teeth

For a conventional bonded bridge, the supporting teeth are gently shaped under local anaesthetic. A Maryland bridge usually needs little or no preparation of the neighbouring teeth.

  3. 03

    Impressions or scans

We take impressions or digital scans and match the shade of your teeth, so the dental laboratory can make a bridge that fits well and blends in. A temporary may be fitted meanwhile.

  4. 04

    Fitting your bridge

Once your bridge is back from the laboratory, your dentist checks the fit, appearance and bite, makes any small adjustments and then fixes it firmly in place.

What types of bridge are available?

There are a few different bridge designs, and your dentist will recommend the most suitable one after looking at your teeth, gums and bite.

  • Bonded (conventional) bridges - a false tooth, called a pontic, held in place by crowns on the teeth either side of the gap. Strong and long-lasting, and a good choice where the neighbouring teeth would benefit from crowns anyway.
  • Maryland bridges - a false tooth attached to a thin wing that is bonded to the back of a neighbouring tooth. A more conservative option, as little or no tooth needs to be removed, and often used for front teeth.
  • Implant-supported bridges - where the neighbouring teeth are not strong enough to support a bridge, it can be held by dental implants instead.

How long does a dental bridge last?

Looking after your bridge

With good care, a dental bridge typically lasts 10 to 15 years, and many last longer. How long yours lasts will depend on the health of the supporting teeth and gums, and on how well you look after them.

Brush twice a day and clean underneath the false tooth every day using floss threaders, interdental brushes or a water flosser - your dentist or hygienist will show you how. Regular check-ups and hygiene appointments help us spot any problems early. If a bridge ever comes loose, keep it safe and call us, as it can often be refixed.

Is having a bridge fitted painful?

Preparing the supporting teeth is done under local anaesthetic, so you should feel some pressure rather than pain. Your teeth may feel a little sensitive for a few days afterwards, and it can take a short while to get used to the feel of your new bridge.

If you feel nervous about dental treatment, please let us know when you book. Our friendly team will take things at your pace and explain each step before we begin.

FAQs

Dental Bridges FAQs

Can I have a bridge on the NHS?

Bridges can be provided on the NHS where clinically appropriate, as part of Band 3 treatment (£332.10). NHS availability varies, so please call us on 01902 675 801 to check. Choosing a private bridge may give you a wider choice of designs and materials.

How many visits will I need?

Most bridges need two appointments - one to prepare the teeth and take impressions or scans, and one to fit the finished bridge. Your dentist may suggest extra visits if any other treatment is needed first.

Should I choose a bridge or an implant?

Both can work very well. A bridge is usually quicker and avoids surgery, but relies on the neighbouring teeth for support. An implant replaces the root as well and doesn’t involve the teeth either side. Your dentist will explain the pros and cons for your situation.

Will my bridge look natural?

Bridges are made to match the shade and shape of your surrounding teeth, so in most cases people won’t be able to tell which tooth is the replacement.

Can I eat normally with a bridge?

Once you’re used to it, you should be able to eat most foods comfortably. Take care with very hard or sticky foods, and avoid biting on hard objects such as pen lids or ice.
