Teeth straightening in Sedgley & Dudley

Teeth Straightening For a Straighter, Healthier Smile

From nearly invisible clear aligners, including Invisalign, to fixed and cosmetic braces, it’s never been easier to straighten your teeth discreetly. At Highview Dental Practice in Sedgley, Dudley, we help adults and children correct crooked, crowded or gappy teeth, with a treatment plan that fits around everyday life and a clear idea of what to expect before you start.

Why straighten your teeth?

Straighter teeth aren’t just about appearance. Crooked or crowded teeth can be harder to clean, which may increase the risk of decay and gum disease, and an uneven bite can put extra strain on certain teeth. Orthodontic treatment is possible at any age, and modern options mean you can straighten your teeth without a mouth full of metal.

  • Discreet clear aligner options
  • Easier to keep clean

What happens during teeth straightening?

  1. 01

    Orthodontic consultation

Your dentist checks your teeth, gums and bite, talks about what’s bothering you and explains whether clear aligners or fixed braces would suit you best.

  2. 02

    Records & digital scan

At an orthodontic records appointment we take photographs, any X-rays needed and an iTero digital scan of your teeth, often without the need for traditional impressions.

  3. 03

    Your treatment plan

Your dentist plans how your teeth will move and gives you a clear, itemised plan with an estimated treatment time and costs, so you can decide with confidence.

  4. 04

    Straightening your teeth

Aligners are usually changed for a new set every couple of weeks, while braces are adjusted at regular appointments. We’ll see you periodically to check everything is progressing as planned.

  5. 05

    Retainers to keep your smile

Once your teeth are straight, retainers - fixed, removable or both - hold them in their new position. Wearing them as advised is the key to keeping your result.

Clear aligners or fixed braces - which is right for me?

Clear aligners, including Invisalign, are a series of nearly invisible, removable trays custom-made for your teeth, each moving them a little at a time. You take them out to eat, drink and brush, so there are no food restrictions - but they need to be worn for most of the day, usually 20 to 22 hours, to work well.

Fixed braces use small brackets bonded to your teeth and a wire that gently guides them into position. Because they can’t be removed, they suit many cases, including more complex tooth movements. Cosmetic braces use tooth-coloured or clear brackets for a more discreet look.

Your dentist will explain the pros and cons of each for your teeth and lifestyle. Our principal dentist Dr Mani Reehal and associate dentist Dr Edmund Acheampong both have a particular interest in orthodontics, and dental nurse Gemma Jones enjoys supporting patients through orthodontic treatment.

How long does teeth straightening take?

Every smile is different

Treatment time depends on how much your teeth need to move. Minor corrections may take a few months, while more complex cases can take a year or more. Your dentist will give you an estimated timescale at your consultation.

After treatment, teeth naturally tend to drift back towards their old positions, so retainers are an essential part of orthodontic care. Your dentist will advise how often to wear them - for many people this is long term.

Does teeth straightening hurt?

Orthodontic treatment isn’t usually painful, but it’s common to feel some pressure or tenderness for a few days when you start a new set of aligners or after a brace adjustment. This normally settles quickly, and over-the-counter pain relief can help if needed.

With fixed braces, the brackets may rub at first while your cheeks and lips get used to them, and orthodontic wax can help. If you feel anxious about treatment, let us know and we’ll take things at your pace.

FAQs

Teeth Straightening FAQs

How much does teeth straightening cost?

Clear aligners including Invisalign start from £3,800, fixed braces from £2,950 and cosmetic fixed braces from £3,200. The exact cost depends on your case, and you’ll receive a personalised, itemised estimate after your orthodontic records appointment.

Is orthodontic treatment available on the NHS?

NHS orthodontic treatment is usually only available for under-18s with a clear clinical need, and is normally provided through referral to a specialist orthodontist. Adults generally pay privately. Your dentist can advise - please call to check NHS availability.

Am I too old to straighten my teeth?

Not at all. Orthodontic treatment is possible at any age, as long as your teeth and gums are healthy. Many adults choose clear aligners or cosmetic braces because they are so discreet.

Will people notice I’m wearing aligners?

Clear aligners are nearly invisible, so most people won’t notice unless you tell them. Some treatments use small tooth-coloured attachments on certain teeth to help the aligners grip, but these are designed to be discreet.

Can I eat normally during treatment?

With aligners, you remove them to eat and drink anything other than water, then brush before putting them back in. With fixed braces, it’s best to avoid very hard, sticky or chewy foods that could damage the brackets or wire.

What happens after my teeth are straight?

You’ll be given retainers to keep your teeth in their new position. Retainers can be fixed behind the teeth, removable, or a combination of both, and additional or replacement retainers are available if needed.
