Root canal treatment in Sedgley & Dudley

Root Canal Treatment To Save Your Natural Tooth

If the nerve inside a tooth becomes infected or inflamed, root canal treatment can often save the tooth rather than removing it. At Highview Dental Practice in Sedgley, Dudley, our dentists carry out root canal treatment carefully and calmly, explaining each stage so you know exactly what to expect and can feel at ease throughout.

Why might you need root canal treatment?

Deep decay, a crack or an injury can let bacteria reach the pulp - the soft tissue containing the nerve and blood supply in the centre of your tooth. Left untreated, this can cause pain, swelling and an abscess. Root canal treatment removes the infection, so you can usually keep your own tooth and avoid an extraction.

  • Helps relieve toothache
  • Keeps your natural tooth
  • Treats infection at source

What happens during root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment is often completed over one or two appointments, depending on the tooth and the infection.

  1. 01

    Assessment and X-rays

Your dentist examines the tooth and takes X-rays to see the shape of the root canals and how far any infection has spread, then explains your options.

  2. 02

    Numbing and cleaning

The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic. The infected pulp is removed and the root canals are carefully cleaned, shaped and disinfected.

  3. 03

    Filling the canals

Once the canals are clean, they are filled and sealed to help stop bacteria getting back in. A temporary filling may be placed between visits.

  4. 04

    Restoring the tooth

The tooth is restored with a permanent filling. Back teeth in particular often benefit from a crown afterwards to protect and strengthen them.

Is root canal treatment painful?

Gentle, unhurried care

Root canal treatment has an unfair reputation. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, so for most people it feels much like having a filling - and it is usually the infection, not the treatment, that causes the pain.

Afterwards the tooth may feel tender for a few days. Over-the-counter pain relief usually helps, and your dentist will give you aftercare advice. If you have any swelling or the pain gets worse, please call us on 01902 675 801.

Our Principal Dentist, Dr Mani Reehal, has a particular interest in root canal treatment and enjoys helping nervous patients feel at ease.

What are the alternatives?

The main alternative to root canal treatment is removing the tooth. Keeping your natural tooth is usually the best option where possible, as it helps maintain your bite and stops neighbouring teeth drifting.

If a tooth cannot be saved, or you decide against root canal treatment, your dentist will talk you through extraction and options for replacing the gap, such as a bridge, denture or dental implant.

How long does a root-treated tooth last?

With a good final restoration and regular care, a root-treated tooth can often last for many years. Because the tooth no longer has a nerve, it can become more brittle, which is why your dentist may recommend a crown.

Keep brushing twice a day, clean between your teeth and attend regular check-ups so your dentist can keep an eye on the tooth. If a treated tooth develops problems later, re-treatment may be possible.

FAQs

Root Canal Treatment FAQs

How much does root canal treatment cost?

Private root canal treatment is from £440 for front teeth and premolars, with molars costing more because they have more canals. On the NHS it is covered by Band 2 (£76.60) - please call to check NHS availability. Your dentist will give you a personalised estimate first.

How many appointments will I need?

Many root canal treatments are completed in one or two visits, but some teeth with curved or complex roots may need more. Your dentist will let you know what to expect after assessing the tooth.

Will I need a crown afterwards?

Not always, but back teeth and heavily filled teeth often benefit from a crown to protect them from breaking. Your dentist will advise whether a crown is recommended for your tooth.

I have toothache now - what should I do?

Please call us on 01902 675 801 as soon as you can. If you are in pain, our emergency dentist page explains how to get help quickly.

Can I go back to work after root canal treatment?

Most people can return to normal activities straight away, although your mouth may feel numb for a few hours. Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until it has been permanently restored.
