Dental Fillings For a Natural-Looking Repair

A small cavity or chipped tooth is very common and usually simple to put right. At Highview Dental Practice in Sedgley, Dudley, we repair teeth with white, tooth-coloured fillings that blend in with your smile, as well as traditional options where they suit you best. Our dentists will explain everything first, so you feel relaxed from start to finish.

Why might you need a filling?

When decay, wear or a small break damages a tooth, a filling restores its shape and seals it against further harm. Treating a cavity early usually means a smaller, simpler repair and helps you avoid toothache, infection or more involved treatment later on. Modern white fillings also help preserve more of your healthy natural tooth.

  • Restores damaged teeth
  • Matches your tooth colour
  • Protects against further decay

What happens when you have a filling?

  1. 01

    Examination and advice

Your dentist checks the tooth, may take an X-ray, and talks you through the filling materials available and the costs before anything begins.

  2. 02

    Numbing the area

A local anaesthetic is usually given so the tooth and surrounding gum are numb. Your dentist will check you are comfortable before carrying on.

  3. 03

    Removing the decay

The decayed or damaged part of the tooth is gently cleaned away, keeping as much healthy tooth as possible, ready for the filling.

  4. 04

    Placing and shaping the filling

The filling material is placed, shaped to fit your bite and polished. White fillings are set hard with a special blue light.

White or silver - which filling is right for me?

Options to suit your tooth

For many years amalgam (silver) fillings were the standard way to restore teeth damaged by decay. They are still available, but today many patients prefer white, tooth-coloured composite fillings for a subtle, natural look.

We also offer glass ionomer fillings, which can be useful in certain areas of the mouth or for temporary repairs. Your dentist will recommend the most suitable option for the size and position of your filling.

  • Available in a range of shades to match your natural teeth
  • Bonded to the tooth, so less healthy tooth usually needs removing
  • Help preserve the remaining tooth structure
  • May leave teeth less sensitive to biting pain

Is having a filling painful?

Most people find having a filling much easier than they expect. Your dentist will usually numb the area with a local anaesthetic first, so you should feel pressure and vibration rather than pain.

Once the anaesthetic wears off, the tooth may feel a little sensitive to hot, cold or biting for a few days. This usually settles on its own - if it doesn’t, or your bite feels high, just give us a call on 01902 675 801.

If you feel nervous about dental treatment, please let us know. Our team will take things at your pace and explain each step as we go.

How long do fillings last and how do I look after them?

How long a filling lasts depends on its size, the material used, where it is in your mouth and how well you look after your teeth. Many fillings last for years with good care.

Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth, keep sugary snacks and drinks to mealtimes and keep up with regular check-ups so your dentist can spot any wear early. Larger fillings in heavily restored teeth may eventually need replacing with a crown.

FAQs

Dental Fillings FAQs

How much does a filling cost?

Private white fillings are from £150, and glass ionomer or amalgam fillings are from £140, depending on size. On the NHS, fillings fall under Band 2 (£76.60) - please call to check NHS availability. You will always be given a personalised estimate before treatment.

How long does a filling take?

A straightforward filling can usually be completed in a single appointment. Larger or more complex fillings may take a little longer, and your dentist will let you know what to expect beforehand.

Can I eat after having a filling?

White fillings are set hard before you leave, but it is best to wait until the numbness wears off before eating so you don’t accidentally bite your cheek, lip or tongue. Your dentist will give you aftercare advice on the day.

Can I swap my old silver fillings for white ones?

In many cases, yes. If you would prefer a more natural look, your dentist can assess your existing fillings and advise whether replacing them with tooth-coloured fillings is suitable for you.

What if my tooth is too damaged for a filling?

If a large part of the tooth is missing or weakened, a filling may not be strong enough on its own. Your dentist may suggest a crown or inlay instead to protect and strengthen the tooth.
