Dental check-ups in Sedgley & Dudley

Dental Check-ups For You & Your Family

Regular check-ups are the simplest way to keep your teeth and gums healthy. At Highview Dental Practice in Sedgley, Dudley, we take the time to look carefully at your whole mouth, explain what we find in plain English and help you stay one step ahead of problems. Private, Denplan and NHS patients are all welcome.

Why are dental check-ups important?

Many dental problems, such as early decay and gum disease, cause no pain at first, so you may not know they are there. A check-up lets your dentist spot these issues while they are small and simple to put right, which usually means less treatment, less discomfort and lower costs in the long run.

What happens during a dental check-up?

  1. 01

    A chat about your health

We’ll ask about your general health, any medicines you take and any worries about your teeth, so your dentist has the full picture before looking in your mouth.

  2. 02

    Examining your teeth and gums

Your dentist checks each tooth for decay or wear, measures your gums for signs of gum disease and looks at any existing fillings, crowns and your bite.

  3. 03

    Checking your whole mouth

We also examine your tongue, cheeks, lips and throat. This is an important part of every check-up and helps us spot changes early, including possible signs of mouth cancer.

  4. 04

    X-rays if needed

Small X-rays may be taken to see between your teeth and below the gum line, where problems can hide. Your dentist will advise how often you need them.

  5. 05

    Advice and next steps

We’ll explain what we found, answer your questions and recommend any treatment or hygiene visit you may need, plus when to come back for your next check-up.

How often should I have a check-up?

Every patient is different

Many people come every six months, but there’s no fixed rule. In line with national guidance, your dentist will recommend a recall interval based on your own oral health and risk of problems - for adults this may be anywhere from every three months to every two years.

Children, people with gum disease and those more prone to decay usually benefit from more frequent visits. Your dentist will review the interval at each appointment, so it always reflects how your mouth is doing.

What happens if you need treatment?

If your dentist finds something that needs attention, they’ll explain your options, what each one involves and the likely cost before anything goes ahead. Most treatment, such as a filling or a hygiene appointment, is booked for a separate visit, so you have time to think.

On the NHS, a check-up is Band 1 (£27.90), which covers the examination, any X-rays needed, advice and a scale and polish if clinically needed. Further treatment such as fillings is Band 2 (£76.60). Please call to check NHS availability. Private fees are shown below, and if you’re in pain between check-ups, our emergency dentist service can help.

Nervous about visiting the dentist?

You’re in kind hands

You’re not alone - lots of people feel anxious about the dentist, especially if it’s been a while. Let us know when you book and we’ll take things at your pace, explain each step before we do it and stop whenever you need a break.

Our Principal Dentist, Dr Mani Reehal, particularly enjoys helping nervous patients feel at ease, and a routine check-up is a gentle, no-pressure way to get back on track.

FAQs

Dental Check-ups FAQs

How long does a check-up take?

A routine check-up is usually a fairly short appointment. Your first visit as a new patient tends to take a little longer, as we get to know you, go through your medical history and record a full picture of your oral health.

Does a check-up hurt?

For most people a check-up isn’t painful - it’s mainly a careful look and some gentle measuring of your gums. If your gums are inflamed or your teeth are sensitive you may notice slight tenderness. Just tell us and we’ll go gently.

Is a scale and polish included?

On the NHS, Band 1 includes a scale and polish if your dentist feels it’s clinically needed. For private patients, a more thorough clean or stain removal is usually booked as a separate hygiene appointment - see our dental hygiene page for details.

Can I have a check-up on the NHS?

We do see NHS patients, but availability varies, so please call us on 01902 675 801 to check NHS availability. An NHS check-up is Band 1 (£27.90), and it’s free for under-18s and anyone else who qualifies for free NHS dental care.

What is your new patient offer?

New patients can book a comprehensive examination and 2 X-rays for £39.95 (normally £80). It’s a great way to get to know us and find out exactly where your oral health stands. Call 01902 675 801 to book.

Are check-ups included with Denplan?

Yes. Denplan Essentials includes two routine check-ups a year, and Denplan Care includes your check-ups as part of the plan. Ask the team if you’d like to know more about spreading the cost of your dental care.
